The Finch Family Undergraduate Award
A $12,000 award is offered by Ken and Jean Finch to a third-year student at UBC’s Okanagan campus. The award recognizes one outstanding continuing student who has demonstrated academic strength and is a well-rounded citizen.
Candidates for the award must demonstrate high academic performance, enhanced by extra-curricular activities such as community service, research projects or summer employment.
The award is payable at $6,000 in each of third and fourth years of study. Subject to maintaining continued scholarship standing, award recipients will have their award renewed for their fourth year of study.
The award is made on the recommendation of the Adjudication Committee.
Who is the Finch Family Undergraduate Award Applicant?
- You are registered in a minimum of 24 credits in your third year of studies, having completed your first two years at UBC’s Okanagan campus
- You were registered in a minimum of 24 percentage-graded credits in the previous winter session
- You have demonstrated a deliberate and focused approach to your education
- You are an outstanding student with a minimum of 85% GPA, enhanced by extra-curricular activities such as research or summer employment
- Your studies may lead to entrepreneurship, innovation, community involvement or local economic development
Who are the donors?
Ken and Jean Finch have donated more than $1,00,000 to establish the Finch Family Awards, providing graduate and undergraduate support on UBC's Okanagan campus.
The Finch Family has deep roots in the Okanagan - their grandchildren are the 5th generation that have lived in the valley.
The lives of the Finch family have been enriched by the lifestyle of the Okanagan, and they consider themselves very fortunate to be able to combine a great place to live, with long term involvement in a growing and successful business. Ken has been with Kal Tire for 35 years, most recently as the company's president and past chairman of the Board of Directors. Jean is an active shareholder in the company.
They would like to do their part in enhancing the opportunities for young people by encouraging education as a way of supporting clean, sustainable growth in our region. By doing so, they hope this initiative will result in more options for young people to pursue their careers without having to leave the valley.
Deadline
Application deadline is 4PM (PST) October 3rd, 2024. Extended to 4PM (PST) October 10th, 2024.
You will be required to submit an essay and provide a reference. Instructions on what is to be included in your application is provided within the online application. Once all the components of your Award Application have been received and marked as complete, you will be able to submit your application.
